SOB’s (Sounds of Brazil)
1982Larry Gold opened SOB’s in June 1982, on what was then a barren stretch at Varick and Houston Streets, to expose as many people as possible to the music of the Afro-Latino diaspora. Its reputation began to grow with performances by Latin legends such as Tito Puente, Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz and Eddie Palmieri, per Wikipedia. Gil Scott-Heron began performing live again with a show here on 13 September 2007, per Wikipedia’s article on him.
