Venue
The Copacabana (first club)
1940–1992Opened in 1940 on East 60th Street, it at first barred black customers: Harry Belafonte, then in the Navy, was refused entry in 1944, and returned in the 1950s as a headliner. Sammy Davis Jr. broke attendance records here in May 1964, and Barry Manilow’s 1978 song “Copacabana” is named after the club, per Wikipedia.
