    Tom’s Restaurant, “Tom’s Diner”

    1982

Suzanne Vega used to go to Tom’s Restaurant, then a cheap, greasy place on 112th and Broadway, for coffee. She was in Tom’s when she thought of writing a song that was like a little film, and she wrote “Tom’s Diner” in the spring of 1982, per her essay in The New York Times. It is the same diner whose “RESTAURANT” sign is in the Seinfeld credits, she writes.
