    Birdland (the first club)

    1949–1965

Named for Charlie Parker, it opened just north of West 52nd Street in December 1949 with Harry Belafonte and Lennie Tristano on the bill. The Count Basie Orchestra was a regular booking and recorded Basie at Birdland here, and Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis appeared. It closed in 1965; today’s Birdland is on West 44th Street, per Wikipedia.
